Do you attend births?
Unfortunately, no. Due to childcare / health reasons I cannot be on-call for the period of time that is required for birth work. I hope this can change in the near future.
If I book with you, can I also continue with my NHS care?
Absolutely! Booking an independent midwife does not affect your eligibility for NHS care, and you remain entitled to it. My care can replace the antenatal/postnatal midwife appointments, or I can be booked in addition to your usual care. Please bear in mind that as I do not do births, you will need to register with the NHS Trust that you plan to deliver with if you are not planning on freebirthing. NHS Trusts usually 'require' you to have ultrasound scans and blood tests on their systems to deliver with them as part of the booking process, but you are not legally required to do so and they cannot deny you care. I can help support with this if you are struggling to navigate the system.
I'm very happy to liaise with NHS Trusts on your behalf.
Do you do ultrasound scans?
I do not offer ultrasound scans. If you would like to have the 12 week (dating/combined screening) and 20 week (anatomy) scans you must register with your local NHS Trust or you can book in with MUMS Solihull (Midlands Ultrasound and Medical Services) who offer private, clinician led antenatal ultrasound scans and screening options. There are other commercial ultrasound companies available, but they are often not diagnostic nor clinician led and cannot screen your baby/babies for any anatomical or chromosomal differences.
Can you attend immediately after a freebirth?
No. Due to how insurance works, I cannot be the first person to attend to you after you have freebirthed as this is considered 'labour care' by the insurance companies and my antenatal/postnatal insurance for you would be void. I am happy to recommend other IMs who are insured for freebirth care, get in touch and I can send you a local recommendation.
Are you insured?
Yes, I am part of an indemnity scheme by the RCN (Royal College of Nursing) which provides my insurance for antenatal and postnatal care only.
If you're not with the NHS, how do you keep up to date with your training?
I am registered with Zest, who are a community of independent midwives and doulas. They provide Mandatory Practical Skills updates and Safeguarding Level 3 training that I attend yearly. They also have a PMA and consultant midwife, and a network of other IMs that I can consult for questions and support in complex cases.
