How does it work?
The test analyses fragments of cell-free DNA in maternal plasma that have been released from both maternal and placental cells.
NIPT requires a single blood draw, which poses no threat to the fetus, and can be done as early as 10 weeks’ gestation. By analysing the proportions of DNA fragments derived from different chromosomes or chromosome regions, NIPT can screen for the presence or absence of specific chromosome disorders.
NIPT is more accurate than first trimester maternal serum screening and ultrasound in identifying pregnancies with or without these disorders.
What does it screen for?
The Doctors' Laboratory NIPT assay is designed to screen for:

Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
- Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
- Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
- (Optional:) Sex chromosome aneuploidy (abnormalities in the number of X or Y chromosomes), Turner syndrome (45,X) and Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY). Triple X syndrome and XYY syndrome can also be detected.
- (Optional:) In addition, NIPT can also assess fetal sex.

What is the cost and what is involved?
The NIPT costs £450 if booked as a standalone service, and £350 if booked as part of an antenatal or birth package. It includes a home visit, the blood test, answering questions and providing support, interpretation of results and liaising with your NHS Trust if necessary.
